Education for Global Citizenship & Art Workshop

Laurel High Global School presented its flagship event to begin this year on a high note - Global Citizenship through Art & Painting Workshop for Children. To start off with, we had a 10-day art and painting workshop which was conducted by Ms Van Steveninck Edith Marguerite Louise. She is a renowned artist from Amsterdam, Netherlands who is popularly known as SHUNYAM.

She has organised and conducted exhibitions and art shows all over the Netherlands, Europe, Japan, India and America since 1980. She is an expert painter and writer of children’s books. She also conducts workshops for children across the globe and promotes joyful learning among children.

It is very important to understand why the school should implement art education in the first place. What are the connections between children’s exposure to the performing arts and their intellectual and social development? According to numerous studies, the performing arts create a powerful positive impact on children in various ways (Einarsdottir, Dockett, and Perry 2009).

Engaging learners with arts help them attain higher levels of achievement since their mind, heart and bodies are completely involved. It takes a lot of processes to imagine a larger picture of a small toy and canvas which is almost a hundred times larger than the actual source provided.  This is an authentic learning experience for them.

While learning in other disciplines may often focus on the development of a single skill or talent, the arts regularly engage multiple skills and abilities. Art nurtures the development of cognitive, social, and personal competencies. Students participating in arts organizations’ programs have higher self-esteem than high school students who are not involved in the arts. (Fiske 1999).

Creating an artwork is a personal experience. The student draws upon his or her personal resources to generate the result. By engaging his or her whole person, the student feels invested in ways that are deeper than knowing the answer. (Mark 2013).

At Laurel High Global School, Art Program organised for children influenced and promoted out of box thinking, consistency and creativity in generating new ideas and brings them to life with new approaches.
