GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Laurel High Global School

Laurel high Global School is committed to practice the following guiding principles to nurture the unique and progressive learning culture in the school through innovative learning approaches.

The curriculum is adaptable to the particular needs of the individual learner and the context of learning. Facilitating choice for the learner and offering autonomy to the teacher to tailor the curriculum to best meet the learners’ needs in response to social, scientific and technological change.

Personalized Learning
Laurel High recognizes and strongly believes in individual differences in learning and designed the curriculum which is personalized, holistic and experiential. The unique strategy to enhance individual learning and well-being is through the use of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and the Individual Care Plan (ICP). Recognizing and accommodating the different starting points, learning rates and previous experiences of learners are central to these plans.
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a written document carefully prepared for an individual learner which specifies the learning goals that are to be achieved by the learner over a set period of time and the teaching strategies, resources and supports necessary to achieve those goals.
An Individual Care Plan (ICP) is a written plan designed to meet the psychosocial needs of each student. It is drawn up in consultation with the child, their family and those involved with their care and establish short, medium and long term goals for the students and identify the services required to attain these. It also includes each student’s physical, social, psychological, emotional, educational, health and behavioral requirements. Both the plans help in monitoring students learning path ways and provide adequate assistance to make them self-learners.
In this regard, the Laurel High curriculum is aligned itself with a system that facilitates the tracking of student learning, effects a smooth transfer of vital information on the learner, and helps to manage effective transitions and progression to other learning opportunities for those learners who move between the various settings and beyond in their lives.
Encouraging coherence and consistency between the development of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and the range of curriculum options, teaching and learning resources available to the learner are the key aspects of Laurel High Global School.

Global Citizenship
Global citizenship education is central to all activities in Laurel High. It aims to be transformative, building the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that learners need to be able to contribute to a more inclusive, just and peaceful world. Global citizenship education takes ‘a multifaceted approach, employing concepts and methodologies already applied in other areas, including human rights education, peace education, education for sustainable development and education for international understanding. The global dimension of citizenship is manifested in behaviour that does justice to the principles of mutual dependency in the world, the equality of human beings and the shared responsibility for solving global issues.
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a written document carefully prepared for an individual learner which specifies the learning goals that are to be achieved by the learner over a set period of time and the teaching strategies, resources and supports necessary to achieve those goals.
Global citizenship education at Laurel High is based on the three domains of learning – the cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioural. These correspond to the four pillars of learning described in the report ‘Learning: The Treasure Within’: Learning to know, to do, to be and to live together.

1. Cognitive
   ▪ Learners acquire knowledge and understanding of local, national and global issues and the interconnectedness and interdependency of different countries and populations
   ▪ Learners develop skills for critical thinking and analysis
2. Socio-Emotional
   ▪ Learners experience a sense of belonging to a common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities, based on human rights
   ▪ Learners develop attitudes of empathy, solidarity and respect for differences and diversity
3. Behavioural
   ▪ Learners act effectively and responsibly at local, national and global levels for a more peaceful and sustainable world
   ▪ Learners develop motivation and willingness to take necessary actions.
Education for Global Citizenship is the unique program at Laurel High and is carefully implemented school wide, cross curricular and interdisciplinary approaches. Global citizenship education provides an opportunity to transform curriculum content, the learning environment, and teaching and assessment practices.

Community of Learners
Laurel High Global School is a learning community in which all members – students, parents, teachers and society work together and acquire new ideas and accept responsibility for making the school a place for effective learning.

   • The foundation of a community of learners is is collaboration - working together for common goals, partnership, shared leadership, co-evolving and co-learning.
   • The foundation of a community of learners is is learning - It is based on conceptual understanding and the ability to apply this knowledge in a variety of contexts, where students are actively demonstrating their understanding, rather than students passing written tests as the sole sign of knowing. It is a new way of thinking for most educators (and the public) to know that all students can and will learn, that learning needs to be demonstrated, that it is important to learn not only facts, but also conceptual relationships of ideas and the processes and positive attitudes of learning.
   • The foundation of a community of learners is within the context of community - a creation of unity through appreciating and celebrating diversity. Collaborative learning communities help students learn the attitudes, knowledge and skills that benefit all in the community and community members become partners in facilitating and expanding the learning process.
Laurel High Global School recognizes the moral purpose of the school and strives to create an open work environment—open to new ideas, different ways of doing things, and connecting the diverse constituents of the community. There is much talk about thinking and problem-solving skills, multiple intelligences, learning styles and fostering creativity by enabling students to take responsibility for their own learning, learning experiences are geared to students' interests and needs, students are actively engaged in learning in a variety of groups and contexts, and learning is understood, applied and internalized.

Entrepreneurship

The principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done.

- Jean Piaget

We encourage students to become our entrepreneurs - and leaders of the future. The Entrepreneurship enable students with the skills necessary to conceptualize, develop, manage, and scale 21st century education innovations. Laurel High Transform students into entrepreneurs- a person with knowledge competence, initiative, good judgement, intelligence, leadership qualities, self-confidence, energy, attitude, creativeness, fairness, honesty, tactfulness and emotional stability.
Entrepreneurs are innovative. They break new ground, develop new models, and pioneer new approaches. Social entrepreneurs look for innovative ways to assure that their ventures will have access to resources as long as they are creating social value. This willingness to innovate is part of the modus operandi of entrepreneurs. It is not just a one-time burst of creativity. It is a continuous process of exploring, learning, and improving. Entrepreneurs tend to have a high tolerance for ambiguity and learn how to manage risks for themselves and others. They treat failure of a project as a learning experience, not a personal tragedy. The entrepreneur is essentially a visualizer and actualizer. He can visualize something, and when he visualizes it he sees exactly how to make it happen.
Laurel High is an incubation centre for creativity and innovation and continuously provides support to the students to become entrepreneurs.
